- Private Insurance: is insurance provided through either a for-profit or not-for-profit company rather than by the federal or state government.
- Public Option: is the term being used for a proposed government choice for health care insurance. This would be a way for uninsured Americans to obtain insurance since it would be available to all Americans at an affordable cost and would not exclude individuals for pre-existing conditions.
- Medicaid: federal program that pays for health care for those who can't afford it.
- Medicare: a federal program that pays for certain health care expenses for people 65 and older.
- Senate: is the upper house of Congress. Each state is represented by two Senators, regardless of population.
- House of Representatives: is one of two chambers of Congress. Each state has a representative(s) based on their population. The House is the lower house of Congress.
- Congress: the national legislative body of the United States, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
